Smoking and Pregnancy

Stopping smoking is the most important thing you can do for you and for your baby.
Chemicals found in cigarettes restrict the blood supply to your baby so that their heart has to work harder every time you smoke.

Guernsey Quitline has a Specialist Advisor for expectant mums and their families. We offer 1-1 confidential support and can arrange appointments at a time and place which is mutually convenient.

You can ask your GP or Midwife to contact us on your behalf or alternatively, you can call us Tel:233170 or email us.

We will arrange to see you each week and offer you support and advice to help you quit. Nicotine Replacement Therapy is now available to use during pregnancy and we can liaise with your Obstetrician to organise this for you.

Smoking during and after pregnancy harms both mother and baby. Some of the harmful effects include:

Stop Smoking An increased risk of miscarriage and stillbirth
Stop Smoking Increased risk of premature delivery (before 34 weeks)
Stop Smoking Lower birth weight
Stop Smoking Asthma and glue ear (which can result in deafness)
